Tips on How to Stay Organized and On Track After a Car Accident

July 15, 2015 – Adam Mann

Car accidents often cause a great deal of stress for anyone involved. From dealing with physical injuries to coping with the trauma on an emotional level, it can all be very overwhelming to go through at once. But what many consider the most taxing is the mental stress that’s associated with staying organized while dealing with everything else.

At The Law Firm of Cohen & Cohen, we strive to help educate accident victims on personal injury law, share our experience and offer advice for what to do next. And with all the stress that comes with being in an accident, our goal is to provide some helpful information on how to keep organized so you can get back to a state of normalcy as quickly as possible.

Here are some tips on how to stay on track after an auto accident:

1. Keep a file folder to store all the documents you receive relating to the accident.

It’s a good rule of thumb to hang on to any paperwork that has to do with your case. This includes everything from the initial police report and photographs from the scene of the accident, to medical records and witness statements—and everything in between. Not only will this help you stay on track, but it will also help your attorney (should you choose to hire one) get things done more quickly for you.

2. Log entries in an accident journal.

In addition to keeping a file folder, it is always helpful to keep an accident journal that lists all the details of the accident starting from day one. Although most documentation should have dates listed, it certainly makes things easier and faster to search for by looking up when it was tracked in your journal.

3. Make a checklist of important things to do with dates of when they should be done.

Another way to keep organized is to keep a list of things to do after your accident. This allows you to check off the things you have done, things you still need to do and things you need to follow up on. Adding their due dates is also helpful in ensuring no deadline is missed in the process.

4. Remember not to give out any information to the other driver’s insurance company without consulting a lawyer first.

By giving confirmation to record a phone conversation or discuss a settlement with the defendant’s insurance company, it’s likely that they’ll try to get you to agree to settle at a price much less than what you deserve. It’s not uncommon for insurance companies to make offers or select repair facilities for you that serve their own best interests—not yours. Be sure to take caution with the information you give out after the accident, and make speak to a lawyer you can trust right away. Otherwise, you may set yourself back on time restrictions and deadlines required for compensation.
